Your Town Hall level gates everything in Clash of Clans, and every wasted builder-hour slows you down. Here’s how free-to-play players climb the TH ladder without spending a cent.

Keep Both Builders Busy Around the Clock
The single biggest difference between a fast free-to-play account and a slow one isn’t loot or gems — it’s builder uptime. Every hour a builder sits idle is progress you can never recover, and over a few months those idle hours add up to entire Town Hall levels. Treat your builders like employees who should never clock out.
Before you close the app, always leave every builder with a job. A smart pattern is to start your longest available upgrade right before bed so it churns through the hours you’re asleep, and save shorter upgrades for the daytime when you can restart a builder quickly. If you only open the game twice a day, lean on multi-day upgrades so a builder is never sitting there waiting on you.
Keep a mental backlog of cheap “filler” upgrades — resource collectors, a single wall segment, an army camp, or a low-level defense — for moments when your ideal upgrade costs more loot than you have. Filler work is never wasted; it still moves your base forward and keeps the builder earning. And don’t forget your Laboratory: it upgrades troops in parallel with your builders and costs zero builder time, so it should be running practically 24/7 too.
Farm Smart, Not Long
You can’t upgrade anything without loot, and the fastest farmers aren’t the ones grinding for hours — they’re the ones with cheap, disposable armies. For new Town Halls, an all-Barbarians-and-Archers army (nicknamed “Barch”) trains fast, costs little Elixir, and snags exposed collectors and storages. As you climb, a Goblin-heavy army targets resources directly and can strip a fat base in seconds.
Your most valuable single source of loot early on is the daily Star Bonus. Earning just three stars across your attacks each day — even against weak bases — hands you a chunk of Gold, Elixir, and eventually Dark Elixir that often dwarfs what you’d grind manually. Grabbing that bonus should be your first attacking goal every single day.
Hunt for “dead” bases: full collectors, storages leaking loot, and an owner who clearly hasn’t logged in. Remember that a base only shows a fraction of the loot sitting in its storages, but full collectors are pure profit. If matchmaking keeps throwing you tough opponents, it’s fine to intentionally drop trophies for a while — lower leagues are full of soft targets and the loot penalty barely matters for a new account.
Milk Every Free Reward the Game Hands You
Clash of Clans quietly hands out enormous value if you just show up for it — and step one is joining an active clan on day one. A busy clan gives you troop donations (free army you didn’t have to train), war loot, and most importantly Clan Games. Every couple of weeks, Clan Games let you complete simple tasks for a shared reward track packed with magic items.
Those magic items are the closest thing to a legitimate shortcut in the game. A Book of Building instantly finishes any building upgrade, a Hammer of Building completes one with no builder or loot required, and a Builder Potion makes all your builders work ten times faster for an hour. Save the instant-finish items for your longest, most painful upgrades — your Town Hall, your heroes, or a top-tier defense — where they save you the most real time.
Don’t sleep on the free Season Challenges track either. Even without buying the Gold Pass, the free tier rewards resources, gems, and magic items just for playing the way you already do. Stack that with regular Clan War bonuses, achievement payouts, and the daily login streak, and a disciplined free player pulls in a steady stream of gems and items that spenders like to pretend only money can buy.
The Fifth Builder Is Your Biggest Free Win
Your builders are the bottleneck, so unlocking that fifth builder is the highest-impact free upgrade in the game — it permanently makes everything after it faster. It costs 500 gems, and yes, you can earn every one of them without paying. Gem boxes and gem-carrying obstacles spawn on your base over time; clear them the moment they appear. Removing trees, bushes, and rocks also chips away at the “Nice and Tidy” achievement, which pays out gems in bulk.
Achievements in general are a slow gem faucet — pushing trophies, donating troops, and destroying enemy Town Halls all reward gems as you hit milestones. Combine those with the handful you earn from Clan Games and Season Challenges, resist the temptation to blow gems on speeding up single upgrades, and you’ll bank that 500-gem builder faster than you’d expect.
One hard rule: never touch a “free gem generator,” modded APK, or any site promising unlimited currency. They don’t work — there is no server-side exploit that hands you gems — and they exist only to steal your account through phishing or infect your device with malware. Supercell permanently bans accounts caught using them. If you genuinely want extra gems without grinding, the only legitimate outside options are honest reward apps like Google Opinion Rewards or Mistplay, which pay small Google Play credit for surveys and playtime. It’s slow, but it’s real, and it won’t get you banned.
Rush With a Plan, Not on a Whim
Here’s the debate every new player faces: should you “rush” your Town Hall — upgrading it before your defenses and troops are maxed — or take it slow? For a free-to-play player chasing speed, a controlled rush usually wins, but the keyword is controlled. Blindly slamming the upgrade button the second it unlocks leaves you with a fragile, defenseless base that gets farmed to the ground.
The balanced approach: upgrade your Town Hall once your key offensive upgrades and heroes are progressing well, then immediately unlock the new buildings that level offers, because fresh defenses, army camps, and storages are what actually make the jump worthwhile. Prioritize heroes above almost everything else — the Barbarian King and Archer Queen carry both your attacks and your defense, and they level slowly, so keep them upgrading nonstop.
Whatever you do, don’t let your Laboratory and walls fall too far behind. A Town Hall with underpowered troops can’t farm efficiently, which starves the very upgrades you’re rushing toward. Walls are your cheapest defensive value and a perfect sink for surplus loot you’d otherwise waste. Rush the Town Hall, sure — but never rush yourself into a base you can’t actually play.
